Morgoth by JMKilpatrick Morgoth by JMKilpatrick
The big meany from Tolkien's The Silmarillion.

I'm slowly getting closer to how I first imagined Morgoth looking.

It's up on my tumblr too: joelkilpatrick.tumblr.com/post…

Looks great, one of my favourite depictions of Morgoth, definitely my favourite depiction of his Iron Crown!

This is close to how I pictured him as well, when I first read the Silmarillion in the 1970s

I imagined something like this while reading Silmarillion. Great work, creepy and outstanding indeed.

So many creative and thoughtful portraits of Morgoth out there, but this is the one that captures his ruinous nature for me, and you accomplish it with great use of light and shadow.
I could never accept that Melkor would choose the form of a beautiful Elf-Lord, as others have depicted him. He would despise that idea. He would have granted himself the body of a linebacker and the daunting face of tough, grim nobility.
Huge, proud, regal and obstinate, unable to leave his earthly form now, scarred by whip, thong, claw, chain and sword over thousands of years and battles. Once the greatest of the Valar, now a depleted shadow of himself, yet still an incredibly powerful and dangerous being.
Would love to see you flesh out further in this direction.

That's a very fair point you make about Morgoth despising the idea of taking a beautiful elf-like form considering his envy and hatred for the Children of Illuvatar, and instead taking a tough, burly, proud and grim form like this. I hadn't thought of it before I read this, but you're right, that does make sense.

I think I've always gotten the impression that where Sauron was seductive and beautiful in the same kind of evil-covering, beguiling, luring way as his Ring, true to his ultimate desire to dominate all life in Middle-Earth; Morgoth's evil atmosphere would have been more outright strong, powerful and brutal in his hatred for and desire to destroy the very matter of Arda itself.

And I appreciate both replies. The tough, massive and grim form reflected his personality. No doubt, Melkor in Valinor was able to change his shape, and could grudgingly appear as fair as the other Valar if he wished, but this portrait reflects his visage far into the First Age, maybe just before Beren and Luthien's quest.

JMK, you got the proportions of the Silmarils just right. They'd be the size of softballs in an average man's hand. At the time he stole the Jewels, Morgoth had re-taken the shape of a towering warrior, both to intimidate and protect himself from Ungoliant. He was never able to leave that form again. Based on the general height of High-Elves and the other Vala, Morgoth might have stood anywhere from 18 to 24 feet tall. The Silmarils would have seemed like marbles or golf balls to him in this form.

The only addition I'd make to his general features would be a distinct red glint in his eyes. As you know, he chose to express his spirit in fire and ice. When he first "came down" into Arda, his eye sockets burned with a daunting red fire and ice clouds formed above his head where he went. Depleted of strength though he was toward the end of the First Age, he remained a being of immense power. Tolkien alludes that his eyes would daunt and terrify most Elves and Men in his thrall. I believe Sauron later took the spirit form of a Great Burning Eye in emulation of his Master. In every other way, you've crafted an excellent portrayal of this ruined God. I love it, and hope you'll try a few more treatments like this at some point. Thanks again.

so nice. Only strong face without all of this fantasyepicstuff like fire, smoke, black armors, darkness, angband throne and badass weapons... only portrait. That's very, very good man.

The best portrayal of Morgoth I've ever seen! He's usually being painted as a monster, but this is much more scary and evil.

Yeah, right. As someone else stated: self-absorbing pride(!!), corruption and inteligence! That's what makes it better than most giant-black-monster-from-hell portrayals!

This is the scariest version of him I have ever seen. Everyone depicts him as a dark guy with pretty face, but you are different in this matter. And I must say you're skilled as fuck with details and with being realistic.
